They Destroyed My Child Because of One Photo

I spoke to 23 parents who lost their children to online predators and cyberbullies. These are their stories.

Let me tell you about Megan.

October 6th, 2006. Dardenne Prairie, Missouri.

Megan Meier was 13. Just moved to a new school. Struggling to make friends. Then "Josh Evans" sent her a friend request on MySpace.

Josh was 16, cute, and interested in her. For six weeks, they chatted every day. Megan's mom watched her daughter smile for the first time in months.

October 15th, 3:20 PM: Josh's message changed everything.

"You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have a shitty rest of your life. The world would be a better place without you."

October 15th, 6:30 PM: Megan Meier hanged herself in her bedroom closet.

The truth: "Josh Evans" never existed.
He was created by Lori Drew, a 47-year-old neighbor.
Her motive? To "mess with" Megan because of a friendship dispute.
Megan's age: 13 years old.

That was 2006. Before Instagram. Before TikTok. Before smartphones put predators in every child's pocket.

I'm Never Having Children

That's what I told my wife after interviewing these 23 families.

Megan's mom still blames herself. "I should have checked her messages," she says. Fifteen years later.

Sarah's mom installed monitoring software on every device. "I became the spy I was protecting her from."

Amanda's mom found her daughter hanging in their garage. The cyberbullies posted laughing emojis on the news article about her death. They were 15 years old. Children destroying children while adults watched helplessly.

Every parent I spoke to said the same thing: "I never thought it would happen to us."

Every single one was wrong.

How do you protect someone from a world designed to hurt them? How do you keep your child safe in a system built on surveillance, manipulation, and cruelty?

I don't know. But I know we have to try.

The Child Surveillance Economy

Tech companies aren't protecting children. They're farming them.

๐ŸŽฏ Targeted Advertising

Instagram knows your 13-year-old is insecure about their weight. They serve eating disorder content.

Depression = Engagement

๐Ÿ’Š Mental Health Crisis

Teen suicide rates increased 56% since social media. Depression up 60%. Self-harm up 166%.

Profit from pain

๐Ÿซ School Surveillance

Schools monitor students' social media. One wrong post = suspension, college rejection, future destroyed.

Forever consequences

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ But Parents Can Fight Back

Tools exist to protect children. Education exists to save them. Hope exists to heal them.

Still think "not my child"?

Megan's mom thought that. So did Amanda's. And Audrie's. And Sarah's. And Mike's dad.

The only difference between them and you?

You still have time to protect your child.
